Dear Moviegoers,

Metro New Orleans film critic and culture writer Bill Arceneaux here.

Welcome to my many-times-over name-changed blog/newsletter, Moviegoing with Bill.

For more than a decade, I’ve watched as critics in the New Orleans area have gone from staff positions at top outlets to occasional freelancers - The Times-Picayune | Advocate tends to use syndicated writers in this category (they also no longer print the paper in Louisiana). This is a significant loss of critical writing on art from local writers.

It is a goal of this Substack publication to cover some of the potholes on the regional film beat, from reviews to venue briefs to interviews to essays to memories. Another goal is to give space to independent movies and events, some from the area, some from elsewhere. All goers are welcome here, from the Gulf South and beyond.

This is a work (always) in progress, so feel free to offer up any advice or criticism at any time.

If you like what you find, do consider supporting this work with a monthly or yearly subscription. The main posts are free to read, but there may be some exclusives coming soon…
